Welcome! I am a PhD Candidate in English at Stanford University and have researched/taught Black literature and film for 5 years. My work largely focuses on scifi, fantasy, horror and pop culture, ranging from Jordan Peele's Get Out to Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower. In both my teaching and research, I explore connections between race and genre-specific concepts like monstrosity, utopia, and apocalypse.
Personal Statement
The wonder of fictional worlds has always enthralled me. And through teaching, I hope to share with others the invigorating experience of reading and viewing speculative narratives. From galaxies far, far away to dystopian landscapes not unlike our own, the imagined realities of scifi, fantasy, surrealism, and horror offer boundless opportunities for us to reexamine norms, institutions, and our own ingrained understanding of self and others. My main agenda as a teacher is always to inspire a deeper love of literature and film, learning more about ourselves along the way.
