I am a PhD student in Comparative Literature at UCLA. I studied German and Comparative Literature at Northwestern University for my undergraduate studies. I specialize in the fields of: border studies, literature of migration, posthumanism, multispecies studies, animal studies and translation studies. My languages are English, Spanish, German, French, and Portuguese. My areas of study/comparison are German language literature and Latin American literature of the 20th and 21st centuries. I above all focus on animal and plant imagery, metaphors, and allegories in different literatures from around the world.
Personal Statement
I was born and raised in Mexico City where I lived until I moved to the United States for university. I grew up in a multilingual and multicultural household, attending international schools K-12. The principle of cross-cultural sensitivity is thus something that was ingrained in me since birth. Upon moving to the U.S. for my bachelor’s degree, I faced intense culture shock due to homogeneity both inside and out of the classroom. When faced with this isolating and alienating experience, I turned to authors who explored their own alienations and strangeness: Kafka, Cortázar, Han Kang, etc. As an educator, I wish to transform the classroom by platforming marginalized voices and looking to the margins, to the forgotten, to the animal, to the environment. I do this by reading literatures from around the world, from national canons and the margins. The literature I work with is transnational, multicultural, and multilingual in nature.
